MORE THAN A STATION NAME

Before the walk, get to know the name.

Sanam Pao is a useful starting point, but station names, lane names and neighboring areas are not interchangeable. A little context helps you choose between staying near N4, exploring Ratchakhru or travelling one station further.

01 / BEHIND THE NAME

What was the “target” in Sanam Pao?

MCOT’s 2024 neighborhood feature connects the name with former military shooting grounds and discusses a 1910 Bangkok map showing shooting ranges in the area. The name carries an earlier layer of the city, before today’s cafés and streetscape.

Keep that story in mind on a first visit. Start at N4 and choose a café or a short outing to connect the older name with the neighborhood you see today.

02 / Neighborhood

Ratchakhru and Phahon Yothin 5 name the same lane

Phaya Thai district project records explicitly use “Phahon Yothin 5 (Ratchakhru)”. A separate BMA street project identifies Ari 1 between Phahon Yothin 7 and 5. Knowing both lane names helps when comparing shop pins and street signs.

The 2018 Ari community research report records memories of the area’s changes, including an account linking Ratchakhru’s name to a royal Brahmin landholder. These recorded voices add context to a lane visitors may first know through restaurant and café signs.

03 / BTS

Three stations, three different starting points

Sanam Pao N4 is on the Sukhumvit Line between Victory Monument N3 and Ari N5. This sequence gives you bearings, not a walking-time estimate; an Ari venue is not underneath Sanam Pao station.

N3

Victory Monument

Use Victory Monument for the Santiphap Park extension or a separate music visit to Saxophone. Both belong to the Victory Monument side of the guide; allow for the walk from the station.

Ari

Ari is the starting point for Ongtong Khaosoi on Soi 7, or NANA and The Key on Ari 4. Ratchakhru is the corridor between the station areas: choose your approach using the actual venue pin.
